WHAT IS SLEEP TRAINING:
Sleep is a basic physiological need that is essential for life. If our babies aren’t getting the sleep they need to grow, then it can negatively impact their development. If parents aren’t getting the sleep they need, then it can negatively impact their ability to care for their baby. As parents it is easy to get caught in the cycle of making sacrifices for our children and abandoning our own needs. But in reality, if we are not taking care of ourselves, then we won’t be able to fully show-up and give our best version of ourselves to our family. I want to support you and your family during the newborn trenches and sleepless nights, whether you are a first-time Mom, parent of multiples, single-parent, or sleep deprived and exhausted parent who needs more support.
The goal of sleep training is to prioritize night time sleep while fostering independent sleep, and preventing any unnecessary night wakings (key word: unnecessary!) However, dropping feeds should ONLY be determined by your Pediatrician based on baby’s growth and weight gain (some babies do need to eat more often for certain reasons).
Sleep training is NOT rigid schedules, depriving your baby of feeds, or “abandoning” your baby to cry it out and self soothe. It is NOT giving medical advice, parenting advice or passing any judgment on a parent’s chosen sleep situation.
What it looks like…
BRITT’S 0-3 MONTHS SLEEP GOALS:
Establish good bedtime habits by:
1️⃣ following your baby’s sleep cues
2️⃣ having age appropriate wake windows
3️⃣ establishing a consistent bedtime routine
4️⃣ practicing putting baby down awake in their bassinet or crib
Total newborn sleep from 0-3 months is 14-17 hours a day, so it’s suggested to allow for about 5-6 hours of total daytime sleep or naps so it doesn’t steal bedtime sleep. Once baby is sleeping through the night you can allow longer naps if it’s not interfering with their night time sleep!
Good sleep habits can start right away but it is suggested to wait until baby is at least 3 months old to initiate any sleep training- which you might not need if you already established good sleeping habits as a newborn!
As a Mom of 3 and as a Board Certified Registered Nurse, I want to be there to support other parents as they bring their sweet babies home to a thriving environment and WIN THEIR SLEEP BACK!
